Dams Near Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar being a hilly region, is the source of some major springs and rivers and thus, there are number of dams, large and small, built in specific regions. Primary purpose of these dams is to retain water while other structures like floodgates and leaves are used to manage or prevent water flow into some specific regions. These are also used to generate electricity by using the hydropower and pumped storage hydro electricity. Dams store water which is further distributed evenly between various locations. Some of the dams located near Mahabaleshwar include:

Bhatghar Dam

This is a gravity dam located on the Yelwandi River near Bhor in district Pune in Maharashtra. Bhatghar dam is about 1,625 meters in length or 5,331 feet and the height above the lowest foundation reaches at 57.92 meter or 190 feet. Total surface area covered by this dam measures to 31,900 square kilometers. Volume content of this dam measures to 650 cubic kilometers with a gross storage capacity of 670,650 cubic kilometers. Bhatghar dam was originally built during the year 1927 by the Government of Maharashtra, who is the owner of this dam.

Purpose

This dam was constructed to fulfill the purpose of irrigation and to generate hydro electricity.

Dhom Dam

This is an earthfill and gravity dam built over Krishna River near Wai in Maharashtra. It was built by the government of Maharashtra in 1977 to fulfill the interest of irrigation and electricity generation in the area. Dhom dam has a height above the lowest foundation reaching at 50 meters or 160 feet and the length of this dam is 2,478 meters or 8,130 feet. Volume content in this dam is about 6,335 square kilometers while the storage capacity ranges to 13.80 TMC or 382,270 cubic kilometers.

Purpose

Irrigation: The construction of Dhom Dam was started in 1976 with a purpose of supplying water to the agriculture, industries and for drinking purposes to the major population of Wai, Panchgani- Mahabaleshwar and some other surrounding villages lying on the banks of the dam. It was completed in the year 1982 and is the largest civil engineering project which has been constructed after independence. The electricity project in the area is run by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board. This dam has a total storage capacity of about 14 T.M.C.

Hydroelectricity: Dhom dam generates electricity of 4 MG from the basement electricity house.

Koyna Dam

It is one of the largest hydroelectricity power plants in India, located in the thick forests known for heavy rainfalls. Koyna dam is a concrete rubble dam which has been constructed on the Koyna River whose source is in Mahabaleshwar. This dam is situated in Koyna Nagar, in the Satara district of Maharashtra and lays in the Western Ghats on the National Highway between Chiplun and Karad. Koyna dam is one of the largest engineering projects commissioned after independence. This project is run by the society of Maharashtra State Electricity. It has withstood a number of earthquakes in recent past such as the devastating earthquake of 1967 in Koyna nagar which also brought some cracks to the dam.

Purpose:

Main purpose of this dam is to provide hydroelectricity with irrigation in the neighboring areas. The Koyna hydroelectric project is the largest hydroelectric plant in India which has a total capacity of 1,920 MW. Koyna River is regarded as the lifeline of Maharashtra due to the power generation received from it. The dam also plays an important role in controlling flood during the monsoon season.
