Mahabaleshwar, popularly known as the Queen of Hill Stations, is located at an altitude of 1,372 meter in Sahyadri hills in district Satara. The forest of Mahabaleshwar is very dense and produces a number of commercial as well as medicinal plants and trees. Wild life on the other hand is limited to the foxes, wild boars and jackals. Deer’s and bison’s can also be found in the Brahma Aranya area. There are rare species of panthers in this area. Bulbul which is a famous bird name in Urdu can be found everywhere in the plateau.

Forest Area in Mahabaleshwar

Forest is the major land under usage in Mahabaleshwar with 78 per cent of the total area covered by trees. As the forest area in the plateau is dense, the people of Mahabaleshwar experience heavy rainfall. The rainwater runs on the slopes of Mahabaleshwar at its fullest causing erosion of the land. Vegetation forest in Mahabaleshwar is evergreen. There is a dense forest in the western part of the region while comparatively less dense on the eastern part.

As per the National Forest Policy, the forest in Mahabaleshwar can be categorized as “Protection Forest and Tree Forest”. The protection forest is confined to the steep slopes and can be managed to prevent any kind of working in this forest. This will prevent water sheds of Koyna, Venna, Savitri, Krishna and Gayatri rivers from getting adversely affected by the erosion of soil or land. Erosion in these rivers forms the catchment of Koyna, Kanher and Dhom reservoirs. These irrigation projects can be protected from silting with the help of this protection forest.

Excessive run-off of soil results in deforestation. So, tree felling and grazing should be strictly avoided in these forests. Forest Office in the area has proposed that the plant-less and understocked areas should be afforested. Protection and suitable treatments are really important for the forest to maintain environmental balance.
