Trekking at the hill station is one of the popular adventurous sports for most of the tourists coming from nearby places. Breathtaking sights with beautiful scenic valleys, steep cliffs, waterfalls and wild forests mark for the adventurous side of this hill station.

Sahyadri is one of the most important trekking points in the state of Maharashtra located very near to Mahabaleshwar. It is a place known as the trekker’s paradise equipped with green hills, lakes and forests all around. This place is quite popular for its incredible historic forts and ancient Buddhist caves.

Major Trekking Spots in Mahabaleshwar

Harishchandragad Caves

These caves are situated all over the fort and at the foot of the Taramati peak. Some of these caves could be found near the temple while others are located near the citadel and are far away from the forests. There is a deep natural cave located on the north western side of the fort and is about 30 feet deep.

Marjorie Point

This point is located on the way to the Arthur’s Seat and lies about 500 meters below the Konkan valley. The drop offs from this point rise from the Konkan valley.

Konkan Kada

This cliff is the most interesting point in the historic forts of Sahyadri and has always been a major attraction amongst the tourists from all over the country. The cliff is facing towards west looking down on the Konkan. This place provides a fascinating view of the surroundings with the most beautiful scene of the day being the sunset. Looking at the cliff, you will notice that it is not just vertical but is an overhang which seems just like the hood of a cobra.

Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat is one of the most amazing and popular points located at a distance of about12 kms away from Mahabaleshwar. The height of this point is around 1,340 meters. It is surrounded by the deep gorge on one side and a lush, green plateau on the other. This place is named after Arthur Mallet, the first man who came here and built house after losing his family in an accident. This is a very romantic place showcasing the most spectacular and breathtaking views of valley.

Kalsubai

Kalsubai is the highest peak in the state of Maharashtra. 

Tiger’s Leap

It is a cliff top which has a sheer drop of around 650 meters which gives an extensive view of the surrounding points. You can travel to this point by buses which are available to I.N.S Shivaji. Remaining distance which measures to approximately 1.6 km can be covered by walking.

Rajmachi Fort

This fort is situated at a distance of about 6.5 kms from Lonavala. From here, you can enjoy the view of the Shivaji’s famous fort, Rajmachi (Royal terrace) and the valleys surrounding the area. You can reach this fort using the regular state bus transport service which has buses between Rajmachi point and Lonavala. Vaghjai Dari which is another popular spot near Mahabaleshwar, known for adventure activities.

Anjneri

This is the birthplace of Lord Hanuman and is located on the Nasik – Trimbakeshwar road. As this place was a Jain settlement earlier, so there are a number of Jain temples scattered around it. Anjneri is a popular tourist spot and offers a number of options for rock climbing.

Taramati Peak

This peak is the top most point of the fort and the second highest peak in the state of Maharashtra after Kalsubai. You can also see leopards in the forest situated beyond this peak. This place also gives a glimpse of the Naneghat range and the forts nearing Murbad.

Kate’s Point

This point is located along the Duchess road and has a height of about 1,290 meters. Kate’s point is one of the most popular tourist spots in Mahabaleshwar. Total distance covered by this point is about 6.8 km. During the winter season the skies are clear so you can enjoy the fascinating views offered by the Dhom dam from this point.

Bhandardara

This is a beautiful lake in the region and is surrounded by the majestic hills. The hills like Ratangadh surrounding this Lake offer for long treks.

Khandala

It is a hill station located in the Western Ghats in the Maharashtra state and are about 3 kms from Lonavala while seven kms from Karjat.

Bombay Point

Bombay point is also famous as the sunset point and is often visited by the people to enjoy the gray and orange skyscrapers during sunsets. There is a large open space in the place which makes it ideal for afternoon picnic.

Karla

Karla is the largest cluster of the Chaitya caves and was formed during the 160 BC. Rock faces around the place offer the visitors with an appropriate terrain for rock climbing.
