Water Supply in Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar gets water supply from two reservoirs namely Glenogal reservoir and Venna Lake. The project for Glenogal reservoir was built on Tapola road in the year 1962 and has a capacity of about 23 Lakh cubic feet. Water stored in this reservoir is utilized in the peak seasons such as summer, rainy season and during the Diwali and Christmas eves. In the rainy season, water in the Venna lake overflows when this reservoir comes into work.

Venna Lake project was executed in the year 1973 and has a capacity of 90 Lakh cubic feet. The water is drawn from the Venna Lake and purified at the water treatment plant located near the Christ church near Makharia Garden. Then this water is distributed to the citizens in the town after purification. Mahabaleshwar enjoys the facility of piped or tap water supply provided from the Venna Lake. In the past, about 15 Lakh litres water per day was supplied to the town. Further, this amounted to about 70 litres per capita during the peak season which was supplied to 12737 residents of the Mahabaleshwar hill station.

Venna Lake also supplies water to the Rajanwadi and Gadalwadi towns in Maharashtra via underground pipes. As per reports, the standard rate of supply of water in the past counted to 135 LPCD but the citizens at the hill station were supplied with just 70 litres per head capita in a day which actually was inadequate for the citizens. Mahabaleshwar had about 1184 piped water connections with the total length of these pipes measuring to 20.50 km. Out of the total connections about 853 were domestic while 289 were non domestic and the remaining 42 were other connections.

Mahabaleshwar currently consists of 207 wells with potable water including 10 public wells, 119 bore wells and 48 public bore wells. About 18 places in the town are provided with the public water taps. There was a requirement to take some suitable measures for improving and increasing the water supply facility for the citizens in the town. A proposal was drawn by the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikarn regarding the argumentation of water supply. This proposal had an aim to increase the height of the Venna Lake reservoir in two phases.

On completion of this project, the potable water became adequate and the total capacity of this reservoir increased to 1.8 MLD, 2.10 MLD and 3.60 MLD at the present stage, intermediate stage and designed stage respectively. On the other hand, the water is now supplied to the town at the rate of 100 litres per capita per day.
